Crieff Guide

Crieff's cottages with hot tubs offer a brilliant base for exploring Perthshire. The market town sits at the edge of the Highlands with the River Earn flowing through its centre, making it perfect for both countryside and town lovers.

You'll find everything from cosy one-bedroom cottages to large group accommodation sleeping 20+. Many properties feature private hot tubs where you can enjoy the Scottish stars without the midges (in winter months).

Top attractions include The Famous Grouse Experience (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) and Drummond Castle Gardens (4.5/5). Crieff was once Scotland's cattle-trading capital, with over 30,000 Highland cattle passing through annually on their way south.

Ewan McGregor was born in Crieff and attended the local Morrison's Academy. The actor has often spoken about his fondness for his hometown and the surrounding Perthshire countryside.

Sightseeing

Crieff packs in loads of sights despite its small size. The Crieff Visitor Centre (PH7 4HN, open 10am-5pm daily) combines shopping with a restaurant and garden centre - I always stop here first to get local tips.

History fans should head to Innerpeffray Library (PH7 3RF), Scotland's oldest free lending library. It's open Thursday-Monday 10am-5pm and scores 5/5 on TripAdvisor. The collection of rare books is amazing and the staff know their stuff.

The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret Distillery (PH7 4HA) is Scotland's oldest working distillery. Tours run daily 10am-6pm and cost around £10-25 depending on which option you pick. Their 4.5/5 TripAdvisor score is well-earned.

Drummond Castle Gardens (PH7 4HN, open April-October, 1pm-6pm) are some of Scotland's most impressive formal gardens. They were used as filming locations for Outlander and get 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. The geometric patterns look even better from the upper terraces.

Pet Friendly

We've found Crieff to be one of Scotland's most dog-friendly towns. Many cottages with hot tubs accept pets, but always check if there are restrictions about dogs using outdoor areas where the tub is located.

Lady Mary's Walk follows the River Earn and is perfect for dog walks. It's flat, accessible and has plenty of spots where dogs can safely splash in the water. The circular route takes about an hour.

The Crieff Hydro Hotel welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating area and The Tower Gastro Pub (PH7 4DT) allows dogs in the bar area. I've found the staff always bring water bowls without asking.

Macrosty Park has a dedicated dog exercise area where they can run off-lead. There's also a great cafe (The Garden Café, PH7 3JT) with outdoor seating that welcomes muddy paws.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Crieff

Crieff Hydro Estate (PH7 3LQ) is more than just a hotel. The 900-acre estate offers over 60 activities from archery to zorbing. We recommend the segway tours through the woodland - even complete beginners get the hang of it quickly. Visitors consistently rate it 4/5 on TripAdvisor, praising the range of things to do regardless of weather.

Caithness Glass Visitor Centre (PH7 3JG) lets you watch skilled craftspeople create stunning glassware. The factory shop sells seconds at good discounts - I've picked up some bargains here. Open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 10am-5pm. A recent visitor wrote: "Fascinating to watch the glass being worked. No pressure to buy but you'll want to!"

Crieff Highland Gathering (held annually in August) is one of Scotland's best traditional games. Even if you're not there for the main event, the Market Park (PH7 3AQ) hosts the Crieff Country Market on the 2nd Saturday of each month with local food, crafts and live music. One TripAdvisor reviewer said: "The atmosphere was electric - best day of our holiday."

Is Crieff good for walking holidays?

Yes! Crieff sits at the gateway to the Highlands with walks for all abilities. The Knock of Crieff is a moderate 2-hour circular walk with fantastic views. For serious hikers, Ben Chonzie (a Munro) is nearby. After a day's walking, your hot tub will feel even better.

What's the best time to visit Crieff?

Each season has its appeal. Summer brings long daylight hours and the Highland Games. Autumn offers spectacular colours in the surrounding forests. Winter is quieter but magical with frosty landscapes - ideal for hot tub stargazing. Spring sees the gardens burst into life.

Are there good restaurants in Crieff?

For a small town, Crieff punches above its weight food-wise. The Lounge at Crieff Hydro serves excellent Scottish cuisine. For casual dining, try Delivino (Italian) or The Tower Gastro Pub. The Crieff Food Co (PH7 3HU) is great for local produce to cook in your cottage.

Can I get to Crieff without a car?

It's possible but challenging. Trains run to Gleneagles (12 miles away) with connecting buses. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, the journey takes about 2 hours. Once in Crieff, local buses serve nearby villages, but for exploring the countryside, a car is best.

What should I pack for a hot tub cottage break in Crieff?

Besides swimwear, bring flip-flops for going between the cottage and hot tub. Scottish weather is famously changeable, so pack layers. Walking boots are essential if you plan to explore. Don't forget binoculars for wildlife spotting - red squirrels and deer are common.

Is Crieff suitable for children?

Absolutely! Crieff Hydro has tons of family activities. Macrosty Park has excellent play areas. The Action Glen adventure centre offers activities for kids from age 5. Many cottages with hot tubs are family-friendly, but always check safety features if bringing young children.
